Product information
The moderate warmth of the JBL ProTemp Basis undergravel cable generates gentle convection currents,
(slowly rising currents caused by warmth), which rise from the base of the aquarium. These convection
currents ensure a slow and constant exchange of water and nutrients with the upper levels of aquarium
water. In this way, the roots of the aquarium plants receive an optimum supply of nutrients from „seepage
sources", just as in the natural habitat. The result is luxurious plant growth. At the same time the ground-
covering material acts as one large, biological, slow-action filter.
Use:
1.
Clean the inner glass pane of the base of the aquarium (dust-free).
2.
Using the suction cups enclosed, lay the undergravel cable in equally-spaced loops on the bottom
pane of the aquarium (Fig. 1). The suction cups hold better if they are first dampened. Note: the
cable has 2 m cold (non-heated) supply cable at each end. The transition from cold supply cable
to the heated section is marked by a dark line on the cable
3.
Lead the two cold supply cables out of the aquarium and attach to the screw clamps of the trans-
former. Place the transformer in the cupboard under the aquarium.
4.
Fill the required amount of ground-covering material into the aquarium (Fig. 2,3). The following
combination of ground materials has been found to produce lush plant growth: a 2 - 4 cm layer
of the specially developed nutrient ground-covering material, JBL AquaBasis plus, as the bottom
layer, immediately on top of the undergravel cable. Then a 2 - 4 cm deep layer of washed aquarium
gravel, grain size 2 - 3 mm. Coarser or finer grain sizes hinder the vital slow convection currents
and are therefore not suitable.
5.
After the plants have been put in position and the aquarium filled with water, the transformer can
be connected to the mains supply. A green LED indicates that the heater is operating correctly. If
the diode is not lit, either the heating cable is not connected, the connected heating cable is faulty
or the transformer is not connected to the mains supply.
General aquarium heating:
The cable is designed to slightly warm the ground-covering material in comparison to the aquarium
water and should operate permanently. However, it is not, under any circumstances, intended to heat the
aquarium water generally. A commercially-available aquarium heater (e.g. JBL ProTemp) is therefore also
required to heat the aquarium. This can be set one setting lower than would be required by an aquarium
without undergravel cable. The following table is intended as a guideline:

Tip:
In summer, when outside temperatures are high, interval operation has the advantage of avoiding the
aquarium becoming too warm. Using a commercially-available time switch, the undergravel cable can be
set to operate for short periods (e.g. 15 min. once an hour) at regular intervals.
