Always wear eye protection when operating or
performing maintenance on this tool.
Always turn off the air supply and disconnect the air
supply hose before installing, removing or adjusting
any accessory on this tool or before performing any
maintenance on this tool.
DISASSEMBLY

General Instructions

1. Do not disassemble the tool any further than neces-
sary to replace or repair damaged parts.
2. When grasping a tool or part in a vise, always use
leather–covered or copper–covered vise jaws to
protect the surface of the part and help prevent distor-
tion. This is particularly true of threaded members
and housings.
3. Do not remove any part which is a press fit in or on a
subassembly unless the removal of that part is neces-
sary for repairs or replacement.
4. Do not disassemble the tool unless you have a com-
plete set of new gaskets and O–rings for replacement.
Disassembly of the Tool
1.
To remove the Muffler (23) (if fitted to the tool), un-
screw the Retainer (27). Remove the Upper Muffler
Clamp (24), Lower Muffler Clamp (25) and Bearing
Ring (26) from the Handle (1). Remove Muffler.

Use a screwdriver to remove the Retention Pin (20)
from the Handle. Be sure not to lose the Retention
Pin.
3.
Using a vise with copper–covered or leather–covered
jaws, secure the tool by the Barrel (21) with the
Handle facing up.
4.
Using Assembly Tool No. 6701581, slacken the
Handle as shown in Dwg.TPD1987. If the Assembly
Tool is not available, grip the Handle by the air inlet
ports and unscrew the Barrel from the Handle with a
wrench. See Dwg.TPD1988.

Remove the Damping Ring (14), Piston (19), Control
Housing (16), Sleeve Valve (17), and Valve Location
Pins (18). Check the Piston and barrel bore for wear
and scoring and carefully polishsmooth if necessary.
Using a suitable cleaning solution in a well–venti-
lated area, wash and then lubricate all disassembled
parts.

To remove the Plastic Handle (2), use a drift to tap
out the Handle Retaining Bolt (3). Unscrew the
Plastic Handle in a clockwise direction from the han-
dle stump.
7.
Remove the Cap (7) from the Trigger Pin (6).
Remove the Trigger Pin, Compression Spring (8),
Washer (9) and Lipped Seal (10) from the Handle.
Using a suitable cleaning solution in a well–venti-
lated area, wash and lubricate all disassembled parts.
The Trigger Pin must be free to move in the Handle.
8.
Unscrew the Airline Connector Nipple (12) and
remove the Ball Valve (11). If the Ball Valve requires
replacing, use only an original Ingersoll–Rand spare
part. The ball valve seating in the Handle must be
clean and undamaged.
