1 Applications
The SLA-48 is a 4-channel level and impedance match-
ing amplifier for universal audio applications. The unit
consists of four amplifiers by which four audio signals
1
/
can be attenuated down to
(-20 dB) or boosted up
10
to 10 fold (+20 dB) independent of each other. Thus, the
SLA-48 can be used as follows:
– As a level matching amplifier to match different levels
of audio units with DIN jacks and units with phono
jacks
– As an impedance matching amplifier to prevent hum
interference with long cable connections
– As a signal distributor with amplifier to distribute one
signal to several units
2 Safety Notes

ceed as follows:
1. The wire which is coloured blue must be con nected
to the terminal in the plug which is marked with the
letter N or coloured black.
2. The wire which is coloured brown must be con nect -
ed to the terminal which is marked with the letter L
or coloured red.
SLA-48
If the unit is to be put out of operation defini-
tively, take it to a local recycling plant for a dis-
posal which is not harmful to the environment.
3 Connection and
Adjustment of the Amplification
1) Fig. 2 shows the pin configuration of the four amplifier
channels A to D. According to requirement con nect
the audio units via a DIN audio cable to the SLA-48 or
via the supplied DIN/phono adapters. Different
examples of connection are shown in chapter 4.
The assignments of the phono inline jacks to the
individual amplifier channels A to D and the corre-
sponding signals are indicated in the following fig-
ures. Do not mix up the connections, otherwise no
signal amplification or signal transfer will be possible.
If required, note down the corresponding colours of
the phono inline jacks.

2) Adjust the amplification or attenuation with the corre-
sponding controls.
For a signal attenuation adjust the controls be -
tween 0 dB and -20 dB and for a signal amplification
between 0 dB and +20 dB. Do not adjust the amplifi-
cation too high in order not to overload the following
units. This will lead to distortions.
3) After all units have been connected, put the mains
plug of the SLA-48 into a mains socket (230 V~/
50 Hz). As the power consumption is very low, the
mains plug need not be disconnected after every
use, only if the unit will not be used for a longer time.
4 Examples of Applications
4.1 Level matching in general
If a signal source (e. g. mixer) supplies an output level
which is too low to sufficiently drive a following unit (e. g.
amplifier), the SLA-48 is inserted for level matching. For
this purpose connect the output of the signal source (if
necessary, via the phono inline jacks A IN and B IN, see
fig. 2) to the jack "A/B IN, C/D OUT" and the input of the
following unit (if necessary, via the phono inline jacks
A OUT and B OUT) to the jack "A/B OUT, C/D IN".
Adjust the necessary amplification between 0 dB and
+20 dB with the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B).
4.2 Matching DIN connection to phono connection
Fig. 3 shows the connection of a signal source (e. g.
mixer, preamplifier) with DIN output to a unit with phono
input (e. g. amplifier). The channels A and B are used.
Adjust the necessary amplification between 0 dB and
+20 dB with the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B).
4.3 Matching phono connection to DIN connection
Fig. 4 shows the connection of a signal source (e. g.
mixer, preamplifier) with phono output to a unit with DIN
input (e. g. amplifier). The channels A and B are used.
Adjust the necessary attenuation between 0 dB and
-20 dB with the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B).

4.4 Matching a tape deck with phono connection
to an amplifier with DIN connection
Fig. 5 shows the connection of a tape deck with phono
jacks to an amplifier with DIN jack. For the tape repro-
duction adjust the necessary attenuation between 0 dB
and -20 dB with the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R
(B). For the recording adjust the necessary amplification
be tween 0 dB and +20 dB with the controls REC. L (C)
and REC. R (D).
4.5 Matching a tape deck with DIN connection to
an amplifier with phono connection
Fig. 6 shows the connection of a tape deck with DIN jack
to an amplifier with phono jacks. For the tape reproduc-
tion adjust the necessary amplification between 0 dB
and +20 dB with the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R
(B). For the recording adjust the necessary attenuation
between 0 dB and -20 dB with the controls REC. L (C)
and REC. R (D).
4.6 Dubbing from a tape deck with DIN connection
to a tape deck with phono connection
Fig. 7 shows the connection for dubbing from a tape
deck with DIN connection to a tape deck with phono con-
nection. In any case observe the correct phono connec-
tions as shown in fig. 7.
For recording control of tape deck 1 and/or tape
deck 2 an amplifier can be connected via branching pho -
no adapters (e. g. ACA-120 by MONACOR) [see fig. 7].
Adjust the necessary amplification between 0 dB and
+20 dB for the recording on tape 2 with the controls
PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B) and the necessary attenua-
tion between 0 dB and -20 dB for the recording on
tape 1 with the controls REC. L (C) and REC. R (D).
4.7 Impedance matching
With signal sources of high impedance output and long
connection cable to the following unit, hum interference
may occur. To prevent this, connect the signal source with
a short cable to the jack "A/B IN, C/D OUT" (if necessary,
via the phono inline jacks A IN and B IN, see fig, 2) and
the long extension cable to the jack "A/B OUT, C/D IN" (if
necessary, via the phono inline jacks A OUT and B OUT).
Set the controls PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B) to 0 dB.
4.8 Signal distribution
Fig. 8 shows an example for a signal distribution. A mixer
or preamplifier drives two amplifiers. For this purpose
the inputs A and C as well as the inputs B and D of the
SLA-48 are connected in parallel via a Y cable each
(e. g. CBA-25 / SW by MONACOR). In any case observe
the correct phono connections and the correct assign-
ment of the DIN/phono adapters as shown in fig. 8.
The level for amplifier 1 is adjusted with the controls
PLAY L (A) and PLAY R (B), the level for amplifier 2 with
the controls REC. L (C) and REC. R (D). Set the controls
to 0 dB. Only adjust other values if different amplifiers
are used or different volumes are necessary.
