When fixing the guided type fall arrester, it must be ensured that the arrow ("top") on the equip-
ment always points towards the anchoring device.
Furthermore, the safety karabiner / climbing hook BS 10/20 fastened to the leading end of the
flexible anchor line should be checked for correct seat and
Guided type fall arresters may only be manually operated for downward movements from a safe
place. If this is not ensured, there may be a danger to life as the fall arrester is not locked in the
event of falling.
Guided type fall arresters MAS S 11 and S 16 come with a shock absorber sewn onto the D ring
(length 0.44m), with safety karabiner or alternatively with a climbing hook type BS 20 (max.
length of the fall arrester including connectors: 0.57 m). The safety karabiner is fixed on a D ring
of the harness and must be checked for safe seat and closing. If possible, the front D ring should
be used. The sewn shock absorber must neither be manipulated nor extended as this would re-
sult in a higher falling height and thus to failure of the fall arrester or to hitting the floor or objects
due to the higher falling distance. Prior to using the sewn shock absorber, it must be checked for
damage. The user must ensure that there is always sufficient clearance below him or her so that
he or she does not hit the floor or objects in the event of falling.
For these guided type fall arresters, the required clearance below the user's feet is as follows:
Guided type fall arrester
Clearance below the user's feet for
a max. weight of 100 kg
Clearance below the user's feet for
a max. weight of 150 kg
For longer flexible anchor lines (> 15.0m), the required clearance below the user's feet must be
determined according to the expected extension of the falling distance resulting from rope ex-
pansion. For more information, please contact the manufacturer.
The anchoring device for the moving guide must be vertically above the user, if possible. The
anchoring device must have a minimum strength of 10 kN and must be such that the connectors
of theflexible anchor line can freely move yet cannot accidentally become undone.
Strain on the fall arresters due to sharp edges must be prevented.
2.2. Instructions for horizontal use:
The guided type fall arrester including the flexible anchor line was also successfully tested for
horizontal use and a simulated fall over a steel edge with a radius of r = 0.5 mm with no burrs.
This test demonstrated that the equipment is suitable for being pulled over similar edges, e.g.,
rolled steel sections, wooden beams or clad, rounded parapets. Irrespective of this test, the fol-
lowing instructions must be observed in the event of horizontal or inclined use where there is a
risk of falling over an edge:
1. If a risk assessment carried out prior to beginning the work reveals that the edge is espe-
cially "cutting" and/or is not free from burrs (e.g., unclad parapet, trapezoidal sheet or
sharp concrete edge), the following measures must be observed:
before starting work, appropriate steps must be taken to prevent falling over the
edge, or
some form of edge protection must be installed prior to starting work or
the manufacturer must be contacted.
2. The anchoring device of the moving guide must not be below the level on which the user
stands (e.g., platform, flat roof).
3. The change of direction over the edge (measured between the two legs of the flexible an-
chor line) must be at least 90°.
