4 – CHOOSING THE WOOD
Use only natural wood and/or charcoal for barbecues. Do not use any other fuel.
The quality of your wood directly affects the heat production, the duration of combustion and the
performance of your appliance.
Softwoods generally burn hotter and faster, producing dangerously volatile sparks.
Hardwoods burn slower and produce better embers.
The moisture content of the wood is a very important factor to consider when buying or preparing
wood for your appliance. Freshly cut wood from a living tree (greenwood) contains a lot of moisture. As
you might expect, greenwood burns badly. You must dry the greenwood before using it in your
appliance. To dry green wood properly, split it, stack it and allow it to air dry for a year. The energy
value of dry wood is up to three times that of wet wood.
Below is a list of some wood species and their relative value of the weight and relative energy content
by volume of dry stacked wood.
The higher the energy content, the longer the duration of combustion. The highest energy wood is
usually the best for your appliance.
The main point of this table is, in the order of top to bottom and left to right, that it ranks the quality
of woods you can use in your appliance from best to worst.
