bus bars, distribution boxes, switches, sockets) in the per-
manent installation and appliances for industrial use, such
as stationary motors, with a constant connection to the
permanent installation.
- Overvoltage category IV covers appliances intended for
use on or near the infeed into the electrical installations
of buildings, as viewed from the main distributor towards
the grid. Examples of such appliances are electricity
meters, overcurrent protection switches and ripple con-
trol devices.
- Small air gaps can be bridged by solid parts, dust or
water.
Degree of fouling
The following degrees of fouling are specified in ac-
cordance with IEC 664:
- Degree of fouling 1
No fouling or only dry, non-conductive fouling occurs.
The fouling has no influence.
- Degree of fouling 2
Only non-conductive fouling occurs. However, occasio-
nal conductance is to be expected due to condensation.
- Degree of fouling 3
Conductive fouling occurs, or dry, non-conductive fou-
ling that becomes conductive since condensation is to ‚
be expected.
- Degree of fouling 4
The fouling leads to continuous conductance due to con-
ductive dust, rain or snow.
