The Principle
The main purpose of the Fusion/Navigation feature is to provide
additional image information from a 2nd modality during a therapeutic
or diagnostic ultrasound session. This is accomplished by mounting
a tracking device on the transducer, which provides its position and
orientation in space while the standard ultrasound procedure takes place.
The information from the tracking device and the 3D dataset of the
2nd modality (typically MRI or a CT scan) is combined to compute a
virtual slice image that is spatially comparable to the currently displayed
ultrasound scan.
WARNING
Fusion performance can be impacted by organ deformation due to
application of excessive pressure of the transducer on the patient's body,
patient's breathing or different patient position during the 2nd modality
exam.
Before the system is able to compute the 2nd modality image correctly it
is necessary to perform a "registration" procedure.
WARNING
Do not forget to register before any Fusion/Navigation exam.
After the registration, Fusion/Navigation displays the 2nd modality
image and the current ultrasound image side by side, or overlaps the
