WHAT IS INTERFERENCE?

4
The basic idea of interference is that
you use two different mid-frequency
alternating currents (1,001–10,000 Hz)
in the treatment area. Where the two
mid-frequency currents meet, a current
is created that has a lower frequency
(1–1,000 Hz) or beats per second
(bps). The advantage of mid-frequency
currents is that they pass through the
tissue more easily and deeply than low-
frequency current, which gives somato-
sensory and motor nerve stimulation.
By blocking pain impulses (the Gate
Controltheory)and releasing endorphins,
interference currents ease both acute
and
long-term
Interference can also be used to gene-
rate muscle contractions, which can be
used for training the perineal muscles
and reducing edemas.
Interference can be applied to the tissue
in two ways, quadripolar or bipolar.
Quadripolar application (programs 1–3
in the CEFAR IFC) requires four elec-
trodes placed so that the current meets
in the treatment area. Where the cur-
rent meets, a current field is created in
a four-leaf clover shape; see illustration

can be constant or modulated. The aim
of modulation is to avoid nerve adapta-
tion and to enhance comfort for the
user. Adding a vector scan to the quad-
ripolar method – which the CEFAR

IFC does – creates a larger treatment
area, since the interference current is
not constant but scans, or rotates, over
a larger area (40% scan ≈ 45 degrees'
rotation); see illustration 2.

Bipolar application, commonly called
premodulated (Programs 4–6 in the
CEFAR IFC), uses only two electrodes.
The current is not modulated in the
tissue, but in the stimulator, so it is
already modulated when it reaches the
electrodes. The treatment field should
be between the two electrodes.
