35 Remote control connection
Connection of a remote control other than one
specified by Enraf-Nonius can adversely affect
the safety of the patient and correct functioning
of the equipment, and is therefore not permitted.
As soon as the remote control is connected to the
Endomed 581
ID
, the patient current can only be set via
this. When a remote control is connected up during a
treatment the patient current will decrease to 0 for safety
reasons.
36 Patient cable connection
Connection for the patient cable supplied. Via
this patient cable a Vacotron 560 can be con-
nected for use with vacuum electrodes, or a
Sonopuls 590 for combination therapy.

Applying the electrodes.
Before application, sponges should be well rinsed in
water at body temperature before being put over the
plate electrodes, or if a Vacotron 560 is used, being
placed in the suction electrodes.
Only well-moistened sponges permit good transmission
of the stimulatory currents to the surface of the skin. Dry
sponges will cause skin irritation; on the other hand drip-
ping sponges block the desired current paths.
Caution: Electrodes and uncovered parts of the current
supply may under no circumstances have direct contact
with the skin. The skin may come into contact only with
moist sponges.
Rash or eruption of the skin must be treated with vaseline
or boracic ointment.
The electrodes selected for the treatment are placed in
position on the patient. Plate electrodes are secured by
means of fixation straps. The application of suction elec-
trodes is described in the Vacotron 560 instruction
manual.
Intensity
If the treatment rules are followed, injury to the patient is
virtually impossible The dosage parameters will depend
on the stage of the complaint. Basically it can be said
with regard to physical therapy, that acute stages re-
quire weaker intensities at shorter intervals, while chronic
stages call for stronger intensities at longer intervals, for
which a wide range of treatments is indicated.
When setting the intensity of the current, the aim of
the treatment and the sensitivity of the patient to
current are always the criteria.
Current density
The particular standard for Therapeutic Electrical Stimu-
lation Equipment is IEC 60601-2-10. The maximum
permissable current density is 2mA R.M.S. per cm
verify that this value is not exceeded in electrotherapy,
divide the current output in mA by the effective electrode
area in cm
2
; a value of less than two should result. Note
that placing the electrodes should be done carefully and
solidly, and that the use of small electrodes in combi-
nation with high densities may cause skin irritations or
burns.
In any case, the sensitivity of the patient to current is
the criterion for the setting of the intensity.
