SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAINTENANCE
Please follow these warnings when servicing a device with R290.
Before starting work on systems with flammable refrigerants, safety checks are
required to minimize the risk of ignition. When repairing the refrigeration system, the
following precautions must be observed before any work is carried out on the
system.
Workflow
The work shall be carried out according to a controlled procedure in order to
minimise the risk of the presence of flammable gases or vapours during the
execution of the work.
General Workspace
All maintenance staff and other persons working on site must be informed of the
nature of the work to be carried out. Work in the tightest of spaces should be
avoided. The area around the work area must be separated. Make sure that the
conditions within the range are ensured by controlling flammable material.
Check if refrigerant is present
The area must be checked before and during work with a suitable refrigerant
detector to ensure that the technician is aware of potentially flammable
atmospheres. Make sure that the leak detector used is suitable for use with
flammable refrigerants, i.e. no sparking, sufficiently sealed or intrinsically safe.
Presence of a fire extinguisher
If hot work is to be carried out on the refrigeration system or the associated parts,
suitable fire extinguishing equipment must be available. Place a dry powder or CO2
fire extinguisher next to the loading area.
No ignition sources
No person carrying out work in relation to a refrigeration system in which piping
containing or having contained flammable refrigerant is exposed shall use ignition
sources in a manner that may lead to a risk of fire or explosion. All possible sources of
ignition, including smoking cigarettes, should be sufficiently far from the installation,
repair, disassembly and disposal site to allow potentially flammable refrigerant to
enter the surrounding space. Before starting the work, the area around the device
must be monitored to ensure that there are no flammable hazards or ignition
hazards. The signs "No smoking" must be displayed.
