GENERAL MAINTENANCE
A. Air Filter
A dirty air filter decreases engine performance and
increases fuel consumption and harmful emissions.
Clean the air filter:
• Frequently,
• Always clean after 5 tanks of fuel or 5 hours
of operation, whichever is less,
Follow these steps:
1. Move the choke lever to "Full." Figure 10,
2. Remove the air filter cover screwon top ofthe unit
(under the handle).
3. Remove the air filter cover and air filter.
4. Wash the air filter with soap and water.
LCACTlQKlJ Do not clean filter in gasoline or
other flammable solvent to avoid creating a fire
hazard or producing harmful evaporative emis¬
sions.
5. Squeeze the air filter dry,
6. Add 4 or 5 drops of oil to the air filter.
B fuelTANK
Never use gasoline that is more than 2 months
old. Gasoline begins to break down after a short pe¬
riod of time and 'mil form compounds that cause hard
stmtingand damage in 2-cycle engines. Using a fuel
mix or gasoline over 2 months old will cause the en¬
gine to be difficult or impossible to start.
1. Inspect the unit for fuel leaks each time it is
used. Repair or replace parts as necessary
2. Drain ail fuel from the unit or allow unit to
run out of fuel before storing.
C. STARTER ROPE
Replace a worn or broken starter rope.
NOTE: If the rope is not broken, cut the rope and al¬
low the rope to rewind onto the pulley.
A WARNING
Do not remove the Pulley when replacing the
starter rope. Always wear eye protection when
servicing the starter rope. The recoil spring, lo¬
cated beneath the pulley, is under tension. If the
spring pops out, serious injury can result
To repair or replace:
1. Disconnect spark plug wire from the spark plug.
2. Open the air inlet cover. Remove the impeller nut
and washers while holding impeller. Figure 13.
3. Remove the 4 impeller shroud screws and the 2 en¬
gine shroud screws. Figure 14. Remove the impel¬
ler shroud from the engine shroud.
4. Remove the 5 screws from pulley housing. Figure
15. Then, gently pull open engine shroud and re¬
move pulley housing and pulley from engine.
5. Remove rope retainer screw on the pulley (Figure
16) and remove the broken piece of rope, if any.
6. Grasp the pulley ratchet and wind the pulley
clockwise until the pulley stops. Then, slowly un¬
wind the pulley counterclockwise until the pulley
notch is aligned with the pulley housing notch,

formed by the aligned notches. Figure 16.

reinstalling an old rope, proceed to step 10.
7. Move away from fuel tank and melt ends of rope.

NOTE:
Avoid soaking the air filter with oil.
7. Squeeze the air filter to distribute oil,
8. Replace the air filter/cover. Return the choke le¬
ver to the "Off" position. Figure 10.
1 CAUTIOnTi The holes in the air filter must be fit¬
ted over the posts on the air filter cover. When in¬
stalling the filter/cover, be sure that the filter does
not hang on the choke lever screw.
NOTE: If replacing the air filter, refer to the Accessory
List for the proper part number.
