Troubleshooting
PRIMARY PUMP TROUBLESHOOTING
Symptom
Pump won't start or run.
Pump starts and stops too
often.
Pump won't shut off
Pump operates but
delivers little or no water
BATTERY BACkUP SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING
Pump won't run:
Motor hums but pump won't run:
Pump runs but pumps very little or no water:
Pump cycles too frequently:
Possible Cause(s)
Pump is not plugged in.
Blown fuse.
Low line voltage
Defective motor.
Defective float switch.
Impeller
Float obstructed
Backflow of water from
piping
Faulty float switch
Defective float switch
Restricted discharge
(obstacle or ice in piping)
Float obstructed
Restricted intake screen
Low line voltage
Something caught in
impeller
Worn or defective parts or
plugged impeller
Check valve installed
without vent hole.
Restricted intake screen
Check valve is installed
either backward or upside
down
Corrective Action
Check and see if pump is plugged into a proper outlet.
If blown, replace with fuse of proper size.
If voltage under recommended minimum, check size of wiring from main
switch on property. If OK, contact power company or hydro authority.
Replace pump.
Replace float switch.
If impeller won't turn, remove lower pump body and locate source of
binding.
Remove obstruction.
Install or replace check-valve.
Replace float switch.
Replace float switch.
Remove pump and clean pump and piping.
Remove obstruction.
Remove the pump and clean the intake screen and the impeller.
If voltage under recommended minimum, check size of wiring from main
switch on property. If OK, contact power company or hydro authority.
Remove the pump and clean out the impeller.
Clean impeller if plugged; otherwise replace pump.
Drill a 1/16" - 1/8" (1.6mm-3.2mm) dia. hole between pump discharge &
check valve (1-2" above where the discharge pipe screws into the pump
discharge and below the waterline).
Remove the pump and clean out the intake screen.
Be sure check valve is installed correctly.
Check all the wiring connections.
Check for a low or defective battery.
Check that the automatic switch is free to move up and down.
Press the circuit breaker reset button on the control panel.
Check for low or defective battery.
Make sure a check valve is installed and functioning between the
primary pump discharge and the Battery Backup wye.
Check for an obstruction in the discharge pipe.
The discharge pipe length and/or height exceeds the capacity of the
pump. See Table VI, Page 11, for pump capacity.
Check for a low or defective battery.
The Positive (+) and negative (–) pump wires are reversed.
Disconnect them and reconnect correctly.
The check valve located between the discharge of the primary
pump and the Battery Backup wye is not installed or is not
working properly. Install an auxiliary check valve (see Pages 5
and 6) or replace the existing check valve as required.
