Maintenance

DANGER
HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION OR ARC
FLASH
Failure to de-energize, isolate and ground the passive
harmonic filter terminals and to verify the ground
potential on all terminals before performing any
work on the passive harmonic filter will result in
serious personal injury or death.
Inserting any objects through the ventilation
openings while the passive harmonic filter is
energized will result in serious personal injury or
death.
Periodic Inspection
Periodic inspection of the HPS Centurion P Passive
Harmonic Filter consists mostly of visual checks. Under
normal environmental conditions a monthly inspection is
recommended.
Access covers must not be opened or any objects
inserted through the ventilation openings under energized
conditions.
The following are the steps that need to be taken during a
periodic inspection:
1. Make sure that the unit is energized by one of the
following methods:
I.
Verify that the unit is in its standard enclosure
(nameplate is attached to the enclosure), then
touch the top of the enclosure. If the unit is
energized, the temperature of the top surface of
the enclosure will be significantly higher than the
surrounding environment.
II.
Listen to the unit. An energized HPS Centurion
P Passive Harmonic Filter would make a faint
humming noise.
2. Make sure that there are no combustible materials
within 3 feet of the unit.
3. Make sure that there are no items left on the top of or
leaning against the unit.
4. Ensure that there are no obstacles on or around the
ventilated panels of the unit.
5. Listen to the audible noise of the HPS Centurion P
Passive Harmonic Filter and document any excessive
noise. There are several reasons for excessive noise
which are explained in the "Troubleshooting" section
of the manual and should be dealt with immediately

Maintenance should be performed on the HPS
Centurion P Passive Harmonic filter annually.
Before performing maintenance, ensure that power
to the HPS Centurion P is turned off and that the related
circuit breaker or disconnect is safely locked out. The
HPS Centurion P should only be worked on by licensed
professionals and in accordance with the local applicable
safety and electrical codes. Wait for at least 5 minutes
before opening the enclosure. Remove panel and use an
approved device to confirm absence of voltage on the
capacitors. Connect the HPS Centurion P terminals to
ground.
Internal maintenance must be performed only
with the Passive Harmonic Filter de-energized,
isolated and with all the terminals grounded.
1. Use a rag to clean the lower part of the coils of
any accumulated dust, lint, etc.
2. Tighten all the conduit connectors and make
sure of the integrity of the conductors. Change
any damaged conductors. Check tightness of
bolted electrical connections using the chart
below as a reference.
3. Ensure that the enclosure ground is securely
attached to the enclosure. Clean off any foreign
material and/or rust from the contact point of
the ground conductor and the enclosure.
4. Observe any accumulated moisture, rust,
corrosion, and deterioration on the enclosure
and insulation of the unit as this could point to
problems with the environmental conditions.
Remove all foreign substances from inside the
enclosure.
5. Use a vacuum cleaner with bristles and gently
clean off any further dust from the bottom and
the top of the coils.
