3 GETTING STARTED

3.1 SELECTING THE CORRECT CUTTER WHEEL
The cutter wheel is selected based on the substrate type, coating
thickness and the test method being used, see table below.

3.2 FITTING THE CROSS HATCH CUTTER WHEEL
The Elcometer 1542 is supplied with a cutting wheel fitted. Different
sizes of cutting wheel are available, see Section 6.1 'Cross Hatch
Cutter Wheels' on page 9, all of which fit the adhesion tester.
To fit a cutter:

Use the hexagonal wrench supplied to remove the cutter securing
screw by turning anti-clockwise.

Remove the existing cutter (if fitted) and position the new cutter.

Re-position and tighten the cutter securing screw.
3.3 ADJUSTING THE CUTTING EDGE
A cutter angle adjustment tool is supplied with each gauge for
accurate positioning of the cutting edge on the test surface.

Place the adjustment tool on a
smooth, flat surface.

Use the hexagonal wrench supplied to
loosen the cutter securing screw by
1/4 turn anti-clockwise.

Position the tester on the surface with
the front edge of the cutting wheel
resting on the adjustment tool.

Hold the assembly and tighten the
cutter securing screw, 1/4 turn
clockwise.
