3) Turn the chair upside down, being sure to protect the top of the seat with a towel or cardboard. Put
a little glue on the tapered ends of the wood wedges (L) and pound them into the slots in the bottom
of the back posts (C) as shown in FIGURE 2. Be careful not to displace the back posts.
4) Drill a 3/32" pilot hole through the hole in the back posts (C) into each end of the back (BB). Screw a
#8 x 1¾" pan head screw (J) into each hole, rubbing a little soap on the screw threads will help them
go in more easily. Tighten the screws until the back and the back posts are pulled together securely.
Over tightening could strip the wood in the back. To cover the screw hole, put a little glue around the
inside of the hole on the back post (C) and insert the wooden button (M), see FIGURE 3. Carefully
wipe off excess glue from around the button. (If any glue has gotten on buttons, thoroughly sand the
area so that it will absorb stain or fi nish.)
FIG. 4
5) The back center stretcher (I) is shorter and has smaller chucks on both ends. Glue back center
stretcher (I) in the smaller hole on the side stretcher (G). Glue the longer front center stretcher (H)
in the remaining hole. Twisting the center stretchers will help them go in more easily. Glue the other
side stretcher onto the center stretchers. See FIGURE 4. Place assembly on a hard fl at surface. Us-
ing a nail set, drive two 1" brads (K) into each side stretcher where the center stretchers join them.
See FIGURE 5.
NOTE: Be sure that the shoulders of the center stretchers are in contact with the side stretchers.
6) Place the stretcher assembly with the brads facing down so that they do not show after fi nal assem-
bly. Spread a thin fi lm of glue into the holes of the front and back legs. The shorter, back legs (F) are
placed on the smaller ends of the side stretchers (G). The longer, front legs (E) go on the ends of
the side stretchers (G) that are spread the farthest apart. See FIGURE 6. PROCEED TO STEP 7
BEFORE GLUE DRIES so that there is some fl exibility when you insert the legs into the seat.
