into the center of the reservoir dome
and compressing the appropriate
occluder. Use a 25-gauge or smaller
needle for injection. Never inject into
the proximal or distal occluders or
the Physiological Flow Device.
To flush distally, introduce a 25-gauge
or smaller needle into the reservoir
chamber. Compressing the proximal
occluder with transcutaneous finger
pressure and flushing fluid into the
reservoir will cause the fluid to move
distally. (Figure 4.) To flush proximally,
introduce a 25-gauge or smaller needle
into the reservoir chamber and with
transcutaneous finger pressure,
compress the distal Physiological Flow
Device. (Figure 5.)
A polypropylene needle-puncture
shield, located in the interior of the
reservoir chamber, is designed to
prevent the inadvertent needle
penetration of the valve base.
Patency Check
To check the patency of the shunt
depress the proximal occluder with
finger pressure and press down the
reservoir chamber using
transcutaneous finger pressure. If the
reservoir chamber is not easily
depressed, there may be obstruction
distally. If upon releasing occluder and
dome, the dome does not return easily
to its original shape, there may be
obstruction proximally. (Figure 6).
Pumping
For distal pumping, pump the reservoir
chamber several times using
transcutaneous finger pressure. (Figure
7.) For proximal pumping, compress
the distal occluder (Physiological Flow
Device) with finger pressure and then
pump the reservoir chamber. (Figure 8.)
If the reservoir dome does not pump
easily, the distal catheter may be
obstructed.
If the reservoir dome does not refill
promptly after pumping, the ventricular
catheter or valve inlet tubing may be
obstructed.
Recommendations for Use of Low-
Pressure Distal Catheter. In order to
allow the valve to control shunt
pressure, Integra NeuroSciences
recommends the use of the Integra
