Speedaire Operating Instructions and Parts Manual
Speedaire
Operation
Theoretical extend and retract forces
are determined by calculating the
piston surface areas in square inches
and then multiplying by the operating
pressure (pounds per square inch).
E
• Use of a regulator to accurately
N
control the air pressure is strongly
G
recommended.
L
• Cylinder life is greatly enhanced
I
when a properly maintained general-
S
purpose air filter and lubricator are
H
used in conjunction with a pressure
regulator.
• The extension and/or retraction speed
of the piston rod is typically
controlled using in-line, meter out
flow controls installed at the cylinder
ports.
Maintenance
Remove system
pressure before
cylinder disassembly!
ROD BUSHING REPAIR:
1. Grip the flats of the rod bushing
housing with an adjustable wrench
and rotate counter clockwise until
completely unthreaded. Lift old
bushing assembly over the piston
rod.
2. Slip the new bushing assembly over
the piston rod and rotate clockwise
into the cylinder head until tight.

PISTON SEAL REPAIR:
1. Place the cylinder vertically on a flat,
stable surface with the rod up.
Completely unthread all (4) sleeve
nuts using an appropriate hex
wrench.
2. Lift the cylinder head over the
piston rod and make sure all four (4)
tie rods remain threaded into the
cap of the cylinder.
3. Pull the piston and rod assembly
from the cylinder tube and carefully
remove the existing piston seals
without scratching the piston seal
grooves.
4. Install the new piston seals with the
"v" opening of one seal facing the
cylinder head and the "v" opening
of the other seal facing the cylinder
cap.
5. Clean and then lubricate the inside
diameter of the tube using the
lubricant supplied in the seal kit. A
light coating of lubricant should also
be applied to the new piston seal
surfaces.
6. Verify both tube seals are in place
and position the cylinder tube in the
circular groove of the cap.
7. Insert the piston and rod assembly
into the tube. It will be necessary to
depress the lip of the first seal into
the tube using a blunt tool. Do not
use anything sharp as this will
damage the piston seals
Possible Cause(s)
1. Load binding
2. Valve is malfunctioning
3. Piston seals are leaking

8. Replace cylinder head by centering
over the piston rod and pushing
down. Orient the cylinder port in
the desired position and then align
the tie rods with counter bored
holes in the cylinder head.
9. Square head and cap and then
thread sleeve nuts onto each tie rod.
Tighten sleeve nuts in an alternating
star-crossed pattern in 25%
increments until the final torque
value is reached. Tie rod sleeve-nut
torque values by bore size are as
follows:
10. After cylinder has been completely
reassembled, check for air leaks.
