Science:
Scientific education can be promoted in many ways using the Poly-M blocks. Children can build things from nature or even try
to identify and replicate the anatomy of e.g. animals. By looking at wheels and cogs, the children gain their first technical ex-
perience while also playing with the golden rules of mechanics, they use crank handles and identify the first aspects of statics.
Children gain these experiences completely incidentally as they play intensively with the materials.
Social:
Building is fun – especially in a group. In order to build together, the children must coordinate among themselves, come to an
agreement and be considerate towards each other. Cooperative building promotes a sense of community, the children learn
to get involved in a group for a prolonged period of time and develop initiative as well as curiosity with regard to the material.
In the end, every child can contribute in a small way towards a larger whole and be proud of their joint achievement.
Art:
Art education at nursery level primarily concerns artistic expression, the identification and naming of primary colours, and
role play. The materials can be used to create various things that the children need as a costume for a joint game – such as a
crown, a camera or a little basket. By putting together fantasy animals and constructions, the little artists can express themsel-
ves so as to act out their creative thoughts. The colourful blocks offer endless possibilities for building, as even round const-
ructions are possible with Poly-M. There are really no limits to the children's imaginations here.
Somatic:
The field of somatic development includes physical and sensory experience as well as fine and gross motor skills. The different
sized blocks allow the children to improve their motor skills by fitting the blocks together. Different sized blocks with various
heights can thus be fitted together and dismantled with different levels of difficulty. In doing this, the children learn to apply
different amounts of force and perform fine motor movements with their fingers. By touching the material, the children dis-
cover that it is a very flexible material, which encourages them to build and experiment.
TEACHING SET INSTRUCTIONS
The teaching set is aimed at small groups of up to four children, who are supervised by a teacher. Every child has exactly the
same number of the same blocks in front of them so that the children can complete the same task at the same time. The aim
is to impart various skills to the children with the material and highlight different possibilities. The teacher explains construc-
tions that should then be replicated by the children at the same time, the teacher advises and provides assistance. In this way,
the children are guided step by step in how to handle the blocks so that they can be creative themselves afterwards.
What can a unit with the teaching set involve?
Sit at a table with 4 children and give a bag of blocks to every child. Allow the children to first of all spend 10 minutes familia-
rising themselves with their own blocks. It is important here that the children do not mix up the blocks as each child has the
same blocks in front of them and these are needed for the following tasks. The blocks are chosen in such a way that the chil-
dren become familiar with as many shapes as possible and can perform small experiments with gear wheels and wheel sets.
Then take an animal card with one star and explain to the children what it shows. The task is now for every child to attempt to
build the animal shown using their own blocks. Afterwards, allow the children to spend a few minutes looking at the animal
more closely and, if necessary, add to it. Can a horse perhaps also be turned into a moose? Look at the children's creations
together. What (fantasy) animals are created? Then do the same with other cards (if necessary, with more stars, i.e. greater
difficulty). One unit should be no longer than 30-45 minutes.
The teaching set allows the children to concentrate on a task for a prolonged period of time. It is not about the children
building the specified item as quickly as possible, but instead becoming familiar with the material and developing their own
concepts and ideas. The creativity of the children with the components takes priority here, with the children being given
assistance by the template cards. Completely incidentally, the children's vocabulary is expanded in a fun way, their spatial
perception is stimulated and their fine motor skills are promoted.
Animal cards structure:
A total of 10 animal cards in 3 different levels of difficulty are available. The set contains 4 very easy animals (frog, rabbit,
snake and horse/giraffe), 3 animals with medium difficulty (snake, tortoise, moose) and 3 animals that have the highest
difficulty (crocodile, elephant, swan).
Vehicles structure:
A total of 10 vehicle cards in 3 different levels of difficulty are available. The set contains 4 very easy vehicles (sailing boat,
racer, flower car, simple aeroplane), 3 vehicles with medium difficulty (simple helicopter, simple tractor, carriage) and
3 vehicles that have the highest difficulty (tractor, forklift truck, aeroplane).
