Solution
Replace all four batteries with four, fresh "C" (LR14) alkaline batteries.
Remove the batteries and replace in correct orientation,
as shown inside the battery compartment.
Replace all four batteries with four, fresh "C" (LR14) alkaline batteries.
Clean the magnetic head as described in the "Maintenance" instructions.

Remove the headphone pin (not included) from the headphone jack
Insert a cassette tape into the cassette door.
Check cassette tape to be sure it is properly inserted and the cassette
door is closed.
Use only commercially available blank cassette tapes.
Use microphone further away from the speaker.
Turn the volume dial down.
