Battery Charger Safety

• Always refer to battery manufacturer's guidance before charging a battery
• Only charge batteries in a well ventilated area with a continuous air flow
• Only use this battery charger in completely dry conditions
• Always wear protective gloves and goggles when handling lead acid batteries
• Always remove all metal jewellery before handling lead acid batteries
• Position charger as far from the battery as charging leads will allow
• Do not allow any metal items to come into contact with the battery terminals
• Do not allow positive and negative lead clamps to touch eachother
• Always disconnect power supply before making, or breaking, battery terminal
connections
• Always handle battery terminal connectors at arms length
• Always ensure there is at least 600mm of clear space around the charger, to
allow adequate ventilation
• Do not attempt to charge any battery that is leaking, cracked, or otherwise
damaged
• Never attempt to charge a frozen battery
• Unless the battery is of the 'maintenance-free' type, always check that the
electrolyte level is correct before attempting to charge
• Only use this charger with conventional lead-acid wet cell batteries. Attempting
to charge other types of battery is dangerous and may invalidate the guarantee
• If the battery does not appear to be charging, or displays any unusual operating
characteristics, dispose of battery and replace
• This battery charger is designed to charge one battery at a time. If you wish to
charge multiple batteries, disconnect and charge separately
• Batteries should always be in a stable, upright, position during charging
• Allow batteries to cool for 15 minutes after charging or after heavy use
• Be aware that lead-acid batteries emit flammable gases during charging. Do
not charge batteries near any kind of ignition or heat sources and do not smoke
• If you smell gas at any time during battery charging DO NOT disconnect the
clamps. Open windows or doors to allow maximum ventilation. When the gas
has cleared, disconnect the charger from the mains power supply. Do not
continue to charge. Dispose of the battery and replace
• Wash thoroughly with soap and water if battery acid contacts skin or clothing
• If battery acid contacts eyes, wash thoroughly with clean water and seek
medical help
• Batteries should be properly disposed of at suitable recycling facilities. Do not
dispose of batteries with normal household waste
Cleaning
• Keep battery charger and batteries clean. Foreign objects or dirt may cause a
short circuit. Failure to follow these instructions may cause overheating or fire
Storage
• When not in use, batteries should be stored in a dry place at room temperature
(20˚C). Ensure batteries are stored in such a way that they cannot accidentally
short-circuit

Unpacking Your Tool

• Carefully unpack and inspect your tool. Fully familiarise yourself with all its
features and functions
• Ensure that all parts of the tool are present and in good condition. If any parts
are missing or damaged, have such parts replaced before attempting to use
this tool

Before Use

• Always wear eye protection and protective clothing when handling lead-acid
batteries. Also, always ensure that soap and clean water are available in case
of an acid spill
• Check that there are no sources of ignition near to the charging area. Do not
smoke near to any charging battery
• Always remove rings, bracelets, watches etc when handling batteries. Metal
jewellery can short battery terminals and cause serious burns
• Only connect this charger to 12V batteries
• Always charge batteries in a well ventilated area
Operating Instructions
Battery charging cycle
• This battery charger is suitable for charging 12V conventional lead-acid,
maintenance free, deep cycle, gel, and absorbed glass mat batteries
• This charger automatically matches the charge rate to the charging
requirements of the battery, and has a three stage charging cycle. The charger
'beeps' at the end of each cycle, then moves on to the next charging level.
- Stage 1 - Rapid start charge. The charger feeds up to 15A to quickly refresh
a drained battery
- Stage 2 - Absorption charge. The charger feeds the maximum safe charge at
a predetermined voltage. The charge rate will automatically decrease as the
battery reaches full capacity
- Stage 3 - Top up charge. The charger uses a low current feed to maintain a
full charge in the battery. The charger will automatically 'top up' the battery
as required
Connecting to battery
• Always connect battery leads before connecting to 230V supply
• Disconnect the battery from all electrical loads (It is often preferable to
completely remove vehicle batteries for charging)
• When charging marine batteries, remove from craft and charge on dry land
• If charging a (negative earth) vehicle battery in situ, the negative charging lead
can be connected to the vehicle chassis. Do not connect leads to bodywork,
fuel lines, or carburettor
• Do not attempt to charge a battery with vehicle engine running
• Check that battery terminals are clean and free from corrosion. If necessary,
terminals can be cleaned with a small wire brush
• Check that lead-acid battery cells are topped up. If required, top up cells with
distilled water
• Refer to battery manufacturers instructions for details of whether cell caps
should be in place for charging or not
• Locate charger as far from the battery as the cables will allow
• Check the polarity of the battery terminals. The positive terminal should have
a + symbol nearby and should be connected to the red Positive Lead (3). The
negative terminal should have a - symbol nearby and should be connected to
the black Negative Lead (2)
Disconnecting
• Always disconnect the 230V supply before disconnecting battery leads
Battery type selection
• After the battery clamps are connected, plug the charger into a 230V AC power
supply. The charger will show a circulating pattern on the Display (1) this
shows that power is being applied
• The correct battery type can be selected by pressing the Battery Type Button
(6). Repeatedly press the button until the indicator light alongside the correct
battery type is illuminated
Charge rate selection
• The charge rate can be set to either 2, 10, or 15A to suit the battery being
charged. The 2A setting is suitable for smaller batteries such as those found
in lawnmowers and motorcycles. The 10A setting is suitable for medium sized
batteries as found in smaller cars. The 15A setting is suitable for large batteries
as found in large cars and light commercial vehicles
• With the battery clamps connected, and the charger plugged into a 230V
AC power supply, pressing the Charge Rate Button (5) will start the charging
process at 2A, pressing the button again will advance the charge rate to 10A,
pressing a third time will advance the rate to 15A. Pressing the button a fourth
time will switch the charger output off and the display will show '000'
• If the battery is fully charged, or near fully charged, the charger will not supply
a greater current than the battery requires. When the battery is fully charged,
'FUL' will be displayed
