DecoMark® Installation Instructions
The manual is relevant for DecoMark®, DecoMark® Easy and DecoMark® Bend & Shape.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Surface:
• DecoMark® is compatible with all asphalt surfaces and can also be installed on
non-bituminous surfaces (e.g. concrete, bricks and cobble stones) when using
a primer (sealer). NOTE: Old and/or polished asphalt also require the use of a
primer.
• DecoMark® can be applied on top of old thermoplastic markings. Make sure to
scrape off loose material and then remove any moisture and dirt. Do not apply
DecoMark® on top of paint, cold plastic and tape markings.
• The surface must be horizontal with only little slope.
• The surface must be totally dry before installation! Remove all moisture from the
application area using the gas burner.
• The surface must be free of dirt, dust, chemicals and oily substances. Remove
these by using a broom, high pressure water or consequently grinding.
Storage and Handling:
• DecoMark® material must be kept dry at all times – in storage, in transit and on
the job.
• DecoMark® material must be stored between 2°C and 32°C.
• DecoMark® packages must be stored flat and stacked max. 25 packs high.
• DecoMark® material must be handled with extra care in temperatures below
10°C as it will be less flexible.
• "Cut and paste" is possible with DecoMark®. Use a knife to score the material and
carefully break it along the score. In warm weather scissors can be used.
• Shelf life is 24 months.
Safety precautions:
• Protective clothing (leather boots/work shoes and long trousers) should be worn
whilst applying DecoMark®. NOTE: No synthetic fabrics should be worn.
• The person(s) making the installation should, if possible, always have the back
up against the wind so that the gas burner flame is kept away from the body.
INSTALLATION
Application on asphalt:
1. Clean application area thoroughly by removing all sand, dirt, chemicals and oily
substances.
2. Remove all moisture present (if any) in the surface with the gas burner.
3. Place DecoMark® material on the pavement with the beaded topcoat facing
up. Make sure the individual pieces are positioned correctly and with no gaps
in-between before heating.
3.a Only relevant when applying DecoMark® Easy: The material consists of
a pattern of interconnected individual pieces of preformed thermoplastic
material. Handle the material with care. Do not lift an entire pattern segment
(usually 0,6x1,0 m) by holding on to a small individual piece of the pattern
only. Hold on to the largest piece or pieces going throughout the pattern.
Each pattern segment is supplied on a card board. The material should be
handled on the card board until it is close to its final position.
3.b Only relevant when applying DecoMark® Bend & Shape: If the material is
not soft and easy to shape at ambient temperature gently apply some heat
with the gas burner. Bend the linear material to desired shape.
4. Heat DecoMark® using a powerful gas burner (pressure min. 3 bar). Move the
flame slowly but steadily 10 to 30 cm over the material in a sweeping motion so
that heat is evenly applied. The DecoMark® must be heated until all the material
is liquid (approx. 200°C).
5. Sufficient heat has been applied when the following things are evident on all
parts of the material:
• The material is liquid and starts to bobble (like it is boiling).
• The colour of the material has changed to a slightly darker colour.
• The edges of the material have settled/fallen down against the road surface.
• The individual pieces have fused together into one marking.
6. Applying insufficient heat will result in inadequate bonding and failure. If
overheated, superficial scorching of the material can occur by means of brown
blotching, but this discolouring will soon disappear once the marking is exposed
to traffic and weather. NOTE: "Slow cook" the material by holding the burner
slightly higher and keep moving it consistently. If the material is heated too
intensively, the organic pigment can make an irreversible color change. The
interconnective glue might also flow to the surface.
7. If high initial values skid resistance is required, a drop-on mixture of glass beads
8. DecoMark® will cool down and harden within 5-10 minutes after end installation
9. When DecoMark® has cooled down to near ambient temperature, inspect for
Application on non-bituminous surfaces:
1. Follow steps 1 and 2 as stated for Application on asphalt.
2. Apply the recommended primer on to the entire surface area where the marking
3. Continue with steps 3 to 9 as stated for Application on asphalt.
NOTE: When trying to lift material parts in order to inspect for correct installation,
surface parts must be present on the material underside or, alternatively, some
of the DecoMark® material must still be sticking to the road surface. NOTE: Road
markings on new cement/concrete surfaces may generate adhesion difficulties even
when using the recommended primer. The drying time of the cement/ concrete
and the transpiring of salts, alkalis and other additives or coloured pigments can
affect the adhesion of the material, and in worst case lead to completefailure of
the marking. Before applying DecoMark® on new concrete, the concrete must be
at least 7 days old and the degree of humidity should be less than 5 procent. The
degree of humidity can be measured with a hygrometer for concrete. Generally, we
recommend waiting as long as possible with applying on new concrete.
PRODUCT TRAINING
All end-users of DecoMark® have the possibility to receive authorized guidance
or product training free of charge. For first-time users of DecoMark®, this is highly
recommended! Please contact your DecoMark® supplier or Geveko Markings for
further information.

Preformed Markings
and anti-skid material must be applied immediately after end of installation
while the DecoMark® is still hot. NOTE: If using the special designed JETPACK®
burner for the installation of DecoMark®, the pre-breaded surface can itself
provide sufficient initial retro-reflectivity and anti-skid values.
depending on air temperature. If needed, the cooling down time can be speeded
up by spraying cool water or drop-on mixture on the marking.
correct installation by trying to lift parts of the material from the surface using a
knife or chisel. This should be done both at the edges and by making "V-shaped"
cuts in the material. If material can be lifted without evidence of asphalt on the
underside, insufficient heat has been applied. Simply reapply heat until adequate
bonding has occurred. NOTE: Do not leave the job until a sufficient bond has
been established. Attempts to reheat at a later date will be unsuccessful due to
trapped moisture beneath the DecoMark® material.
is to be installed according to the installation manual for the given primer. The
more porous the surface, the more primer is required. NOTE: Read the manual
carefully before starting the work with the primer, and read the safety data sheet
for relevant safety measures. Do not speed up the drying process by using the
gas burner, as the primer is flammable at this stage.
