SERIE KDS-500
DESCRIPTION
The KDS-500 series consists of 3 switched-mode power supply models which are available in box
format with a maximum power output of 500W.
The circuit comprises a line noise filter, followed by a full-wave rectifier and a boost converter acting as
a power factor correcting unit (PFC). The direct current voltage obtained, approx. 380 V, is applied to a
forward converter stage which delivers a stabilised, mains-isolated output.
The device is protected from overloads and short-circuits at the output by means of a current limiting
circuit. It has also output overvoltage protection. When the output voltage exceeds the limit setting, a
control stage circuit prevents it from operating. To reset the control stage, turn the device off and then
on again.
The power supply is cooled by a fan, with the fan speed regulated according to the load and ambient
temperature. If an obstruction or other problem leads to overheating, the power supply is disabled. The
fan, however, will continue running on high until it is reset automatically when the temperature has
dropped low enough.
The device is equipped with an optocoupler-isolated input which allows the output to be disabled, as
well as with remote sensing input to stabilise the load voltage, hence compensating for cable voltage
drop.
The power supply has a maximum output current setting range of 50-100% of the rated current. To set,
simply produce an overload condition (not a short-circuit) and monitor the current with an ammeter
while the current is being set.
INSTALLATION
To fix the device, either the plates included or the M4 threaded insert for the base plate can be used. It
can also be used as a EUROCARD, 6UF2, 12TU pitch, subunit. Please check the figure.
STARTUP
Connect the power supply directly to the mains (110-230 VAC) as shown in the figure.
Remote sensing is not required, however if it becomes necessary, a coaxial or twisted-pair cable
should be used.
If several converters are to be connected in parallel, operate as follows:
• Set the output voltage of all converters such that the voltage difference between them is minimised.
• Link the outputs at the load by using cables of the same length with a cross-section no larger than
necessary.
• Do not use remote sensing.
For safety reasons, the following requirements must be met:
• An easily accessible means of disconnecting the device from the mains must be provided.
• When the fuse must be replaced, use another fuse of the same rating and type and make sure the
power supply unit is isolated from the mains.
• Provide the equipment with some kind of protective enclosure that complies with the electrical safety
directives in effect within the country where the equipment is installed.
• Use a mains connection cable having a cross section of at least 1 mm
• Connect the GND terminal to an earth.
