Introduction
After installation of a series-parallel switch:
- The 24 Volt bow propeller will be put to work thus con-
necting in series the 2 (12 Volt) batteries so as to obtain the
required 24 Volt voltage.
- The batteries are being charged; the 2 (12 Volt) batteries are
connected in parallel and hooked-up to the 12 Volt charging
system.
The series-parallel switch has already been provided with the
required auxialliary relays to achieve an easy hook-up to the
VETUS bow propeller.
If the batteries, installed for the bow propeller, are being used
for other (12 Volt) consumers too, then take the following into
account:
Both batteries will supply 12 Volt to the consumers via the
charging wire and via the charging contacts of the series-paral-
lel switch.
The rating, for continous duty, of the charging con-
tacts of the series-parallel switch is 60 Amps.
So never use these batteries as starter batteries
and never connect an anchor windlass to these
batteries!
Operation
After installation of the series-parallel switch, the bow propeller
can be operated as written down in the 'Owners manual' in the
chapter 'Use'.
Installation
The room where the series-parallel switch is installed should be
dry and well ventilated.
Mount the series-parallel switch against a bulkhead in the posi-
tion as indicated in the drawing.

Batteries
Use starter batteries with a capacity of approx. 200 Ah - 24 Volt.
(E.g. 2 starter batteries of 230 Ah -12 Volt).
Only install batteries of an identical model, capacity and record
of service.
The batteries are to be installed as closely as possible to the
bow propeller, so that the main circuit wires may be kept short,
thus ensuring a minimal voltage drop.
Main circuit wires
The minimum cross section is 95 mm
The voltage drop between the battery and the bow propeller
should not exceed 10 percent of the supply voltage.
The total cable length (the cables from the batteries to bow pro-
peller and the cables from the batteries to series-parallel switch
measured together) should therefore not exceed 23 m (75 ft).
Into the plus cable a main switch and a fuse are to be inserted;
see installation instructions of bow propeller.
Connect the main circuit wires as indicated in the wiring dia-
grams. Make sure that the main switch is in the position 'OFF'.
Charging wires
Select a charging wire size in correspondance with the alterna-
tor output rating. Recommended minimum wire cross section is
10 mm
2
(8 AWG).
Connect the charging wires as indicated in the wiring diagrams.
Do not connect the wire from alternator output to terminal 51 at
the series-parallel switch.
If other battery(ies) than the bow propeller batteries are being
charged by means of the same alternator, a battery isolator, to
distribute the charge current, needs to be installed.
Control circuit cables
Insert the plug of the extension cable, coming from the control
panel, into the counterplug at the series-parallel switch. Insert
the plug, from the series-parallel switch wiring loom, into the
counterplug at the bow propeller.
Check
The following exercise needs to be done after installation:
- Check with a voltmeter whether the voltage between the plus
(+) of battery 1 and the minus (-) of battery 2 is 12 Volt.
Repeat this measurement for the voltage between the plus
(+) of battery 2 and the minus (-) of battery 1.
- By pushing one of the push button switches at the control
panel the series-parallel switch will be switched on; check
with a voltmeter whether the voltage between the plus (+) of
battery 2 and the minus (-) of battery 1 is 24 Volt.
Now connect the wire from alternator output to terminal 51 at
the series-parallel switch, switch on the main switch of the bow
propeller and check the proper functioning of the bow propeller.
