Cushion Placement:
5. Place the cushion on the wheelchair with the cells right side up.
- The individual should sit in the wheelchair in their normal sitting position.
- Make sure that the cushion is centered underneath the individual.

Hand Check:
6. Perform a hand check to make sure the cushion is at the
Proper Cushion Inflation Setting:
a. Slide your hand between the cushion and the individual.
b. Slightly lift the individual's leg and feel for their lowest
bony prominence.
c. Lower their leg to a sitting position.
7. Adjust the cushion, if needed:
a. While keeping your hand under the individual's lowest
bony prominence, open the inflation valve.
b. Release air until you can barely move your fingertips. The
cushion should be at the Proper Cushion Inflation Setting.
c. Close the inflation valve.
Warnings:
- Make sure that there is at least 1/2 in. (1.5 cm) of air supporting the individual's lowest bony
prominences.
- After setting up the cushion the first time, check inflation frequently, at least once a day. Follow the
Hand Check instructions above.

The inflation valve should be in the front, on the
left side of the seated individual.
