This document describes how to install Dell™ RapidPower power distribution units (PDUs) in 42-unit (U)
and 24-U rack cabinets. The PDUs come in two basic types: standard PDUs, which have locking inlet power
cord connectors, and power strips, which do not require a locking connector.
The power strips and PDUs are installed either in the 0-U mounting area (the unoccupied area of the rack
between the side panels and component mounting space) using the mounting brackets that come attached
to the units or in a 1-U configuration using the mounting brackets provided with your kit.

Caution: Safety Instructions

Use the following safety guidelines to help ensure your own personal safety and to help protect your system
and system components from potential damage.
Throughout this safety section, the caution icon (

Guide that shipped with your system. Warranty information might be included in this document or as a
separate document.
CAUTION:
Your PDU is safety-certified as a component for use in a rack cabinet. It is your responsibility to
ensure the final combination of PDU and rack cabinet complies with all applicable safety standards and local
electrical code requirements. The manufacturer disclaims all warranties and liability in connection with such
combinations.
CAUTION:
All load devices (computer equipment) produce leakage current. It is recommended that you use
locking plugs for supply connections. If locking plugs are not used, do not exceed 3.5 mA per supply connection.
Have a qualified electrician ensure proper grounding.

General Precautions

Systems are considered to be components in a rack. Thus, "component" refers to any system as well as
to various peripherals or supporting hardware.
Observe the following general precautions for installing your PDU:
Observe and follow service markings. Do not service any product except as explained in your system
documentation. Opening or removing covers that are marked with the triangular symbol with a
lightning bolt may expose you to electrical shock. Components inside these compartments should
be serviced only by a trained service technician.
Ensure that the electrical source power circuit complies with all local and national electrical codes
and regulations.
If any of the following conditions occur, unplug the product from the electrical outlet and replace
the part or contact your trained service provider:
The power cord, extension cable, or plug is damaged.
An object has fallen into the product.
The product has been exposed to water.
The product has been dropped or damaged.
