max bill
life and works
born 1908 in winterthur, switzer-
land, died 1994 in berlin.
max bill – a child of the
bauhaus generation, pupil and
kindred spirit of walter gropius,
le corbusier and mies van der
rohe – was an all round designer
and creative artist, as his diverse
activities as a painter, architect,
sculptor, teacher and designer
amply demonstrate. his work is
characterised by clarity of design
and precise proportions.
max bill himself had the follow-
ing to say in 1988 concerning
today's design boom:
"nowadays the concept of
"gestalterei" has become a
fashion phenomenon and is now
more or less synonymous with
"design": function is no longer
"the unison of all functions,
i. e. gestalt", the "function of
gestalterei" is now something
between sales promotion and
frivolity. we are back where we
started."
