4. Inspect the commutator for wear. If excessively worn,
have tool serviced.
5. Depress the brush into the holder and insert into the
motor housing. Inspect to make sure insulator sheets
are properly positioned between brush holder and
housing. Attach the connector and replace the motor
cover.
6. Reassemble unit. Install all covers before operating
machine.
Troubleshooting
PROBLEM
Groove too narrow or
too wide.
Rolled groove not per-
pendicular to pipe axis.
Pipe will not track while
grooving/Groover will
not track on pipe while
grooving.

POSSIBLE REASONS
Incorrect groove roll and drive shaft/roll.
Groove roll and/or drive shaft/roll worn.
Mismatched groove roll and drive shaft/roll.
Pipe length not straight.
Pipe end not square.
Pipe and drive shaft not parallel.
Pipe axis not offset 1/2 degree from drive shaft
axis.
1/2 degree offset not sufficient.
Drive shaft/roll knurl plugged or worn flat.
Inside of pipe has too much scale.
Excessive weld seam.
Not using / properly adjusting stabilizer.
Pipe end not square/deburred.
918-I Roll Groover
SOLUTION
Install correct groove roll and drive shaft/roll.
Replace groove roll and/or drive shaft/roll.
Install matching roll set.
Use straight pipe.
Cut pipe end square.
Adjust stand to make pipe parallel.
Offset pipe 1/2 degree.
Offset pipe slightly more.
Clean or replace drive shaft/roll.
Clean inside of pipe.
Grind weld seam flush 2" from end of pipe.
Adjust stabilizer. Apply pressure to pipe (See
Figure 14).
Properly prep end of pipe.
