Here are some useful tips to keep in mind when the lamp breaks and as protection against
any mercury leaks.
1) Disconnect the appliance from the mains.
2) Immediately ensure that children, irresponsible persons, pregnant women, pets,
etc. leave the room.
3) Open the windows and ventilate for at least 20-25 minutes. Turn off air conditioning

dispersing mercury into the air.
5) Collect larger pieces by hands and the smaller fragments with the help of adhesive tape.
7) Place the fragments of the lamp into hermetic containers, such as glass jars or plastic
packets that can be sealed. They can be handed in to specific collection points set up by
the local authority, or to retailers who provide such a service.
8) Clean surfaces with a damp cloth. Dispose of everything used for cleaning, including the
cloth, face mask and gloves.
9) If it breaks on a mat or carpet, dispose of it, or at least remove the contaminated part.
10) Immediately wash hands with detergent when everything has been disposed of.
11) The lamp must be replaced by qualified professionals.

A broken lamp means that those present will be exposed to mercury, especially the
person picking up the fragments and cleaning the room. A healthy adult should not
experience immediate side effects to mercury exposure. However, exposure to toxic
vapours can have minor or more significant effects on health. If in doubt consult your
medical doctor, especially if you are particularly sensitive to chemical substances.
