FG8M Wireless Glassbreak Detector - Installation Instructions
1
SELECT MOUNTING LOCATION
Refer to A (on page 1) and the following list for mounting guidelines.
• Mount the detector between the protected glass and any heavy window
coverings that may be present. When heavy window coverings are
present, the detector can be mounted on the frame of the window
• Do NOT mount the detector:
− on posts or pillars
− in rooms with noisy equipment (air compressors, power tools, etc.), if
this equipment is operated when the detector is armed
− where the detector's view of the glass may be obstructed
unintentionally

CONNECT THE BATTERIES (See B on Page 1)
3
SELECT PROTOCOL (See B on Page 1)
4
SET THE RANGE (See B on Page 1)
For best false alarm immunity, measure distance from the intended
mounting location of the detector to the farthest point of glass to be
protected. The maximum distance should be 7.6 m. Set the shortest range
available with DIP switches SENS 1 and SENS 2 that is greater than or
equal to measured distance.
5
MOUNT THE DETECTOR
Orient the microphone for the best line-of-site to the protected glass. If
ceiling mounted the end with the microphone should face the protected
glass.
Note: If using an FG-701 to test the detector, and if practical to do so, mount the
unit temporarily. Temporary mounting allows easy relocation if testing fails.
Use the hardware included to mount the detector in the selected location.
Refer to C on page 1. (Note: A rib in the screw cavity lightly holds the
screw in place to simplify installing the detector.)
Important: Not suitable for use on acoustic ceiling tiles if the rear tamper
will be used. Use drywall anchors if not mounting to a wall stud or ceiling
joist. If the rear tamper is used, tamper screw should screw into frame, or a
heavy-duty anchor, because the rear tamper requires high breakaway
force.
Reinstall the battery (if removed for rear tamper installation), then close and
secure the detector front cover.
6
TEST MODES
TRANSMITTER Test Mode: This test mode shows transmitter activity. It
activates upon power-up and when the cover is opened. It remains active
for 10 minutes after the tamper switch is closed.
GLASSBREAK Test Mode: This test mode allows testing of the glassbreak
function. It is activated three ways – upon power-up, by pressing the
glassbreak test switch (see B on page 1), or remotely with the FG-701
glassbreak tester.
For both test modes, refer to the following LED Indicators table.

When registered, the FG8M sends a low battery signal to the panel
when the battery voltage gets low. Replace the battery. The detector
low battery indication is approximate only.

TESTING GLASSBREAK WITH AN FG-701 TESTER
NOTE: FG-701 is recommended for calibrated range and alarm testing.
Testing with other manufacturer's testers will not give accurate indication of
range, and will not allow complete testing.

To enter or exit GLASSBREAK test mode with the FG-701:
• Hold FG-701 within 2 m of the detector.
• Set FG-701 switches to ACTIVATE and MAN.
• Point the front [speaker] of the FG-701 towards the detector and press
the red START button. An activation code is sent.
When in GLASSBREAK test mode, the green LED on the detector flashes
at 1Hz. If there is no response move closer and repeat.
Testing full GLASSBREAK function (flex and audio signals):
• Place the detector in GLASSBREAK test mode.
• Set FG-701 switches to TEST and FLEX.
• Position the FG-701 near the farthest point of the protected glass, with
FG-701 speaker pointed at the detector. If window coverings are
present, close them fully and hold the FG-701 between the coverings
and the protected glass.
• Press the red START button. The simulator clicks on and starts an
eight-second armed period.
• Generate a flex signal by carefully striking the glass with a cushioned
tool. The FG-701 responds with a burst of audio.
If the detector receives both the flex and audio signals properly, its red
Alarm LED lights for 5 seconds. (Red Alarm LED does not latch.)
Testing GLASSBREAK range (audio signal only):
• Place the detector in GLASSBREAK test mode.
• Set FG-701 switches to TEST and MAN.
• Position the FG-701 near the farthest point of the protected glass.
• Press the red START button.
When the detector is in range the green Event LED flickers.
See the FG-701 Operating Instructions for additional information.
8
TESTING GLASSBREAK WITHOUT AN FG-701 TESTER
Enter GLASSBREAK test mode. The Green LED will flash at 1Hz. Clap
hands near the detector and the Green LED will flicker, verifying the
detector is hearing room noise. To test that that the panel is detecting an
alarm, tap on the detector cover with a finger nail or screwdriver until the
Red LED turns on for 5 seconds.
9
REGISTERING THE DETECTOR
Refer to the control panel's manual and the programming tool manual for
information on registering wireless devices.
Note: For Domonial panels, ensure the detector is registered in its final
position with a minimum signal level of 2/10.
10
INSTALL COVER SCREW, IF REQUIRED
To secure the front cover after installation, remove the cover breakout flash
and secure the front cover with a 2.9 mm x 6.0 mm screw. Refer to D on
page 1.

For these glass types, mounting at less than ½ the indicated range setting is
recommended. (Example: set SENS 1 and SENS 2 for 4.6 m range, but
mount the detector 2.3 m or less from the farthest glass to be protected.)
